The meeting was called amidst escalating tensions following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31.

With the U.S. deploying warships, submarines, and warplanes to bolster Israeli defenses and deter potential regional escalations, Washington hopes a ceasefire agreement can avert a wider conflict. While Hamas officials declined to participate directly, mediators planned to consult their Doha-based team post-meeting.

The negotiations included Israel's spy chief David Barnea, domestic security service head Ronen Bar, and the military's hostages chief Nitzan Alon. The U.S. delegation featured CIA Director Bill Burns and Middle East envoy Brett McGurk, underlining the high stakes of achieving a ceasefire.
