TMC MP Demands Central Law to Combat Women's Atrocities

Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to pass a stringent central law against women's atrocities. Roy emphasized the need for immediate complaint registration, fast-track courts, and severe punishments for crimes like rape and murder. He highlighted the recent rape-murder case of a doctor in Kolkata.

Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy on Friday wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding the enactment of a stringent central law to prevent atrocities against women.

Roy emphasized the urgency of a strong central law during his dharna on August 14, held in solidarity with a midnight protest by women over the rape-murder of a post-graduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital. He underscored that such legislation is vital for ensuring women's safety across public and private sectors, including hospitals, educational institutions, workplaces, and public transport.

In his letter, Roy outlined that any sexual harassment, rape, or rape-murder complaints should be recorded and reported to the nearest police station immediately, with failure to do so leading to suspension of the concerned officers. He also called for at least three fast-track courts in every district, with cases to be concluded within six months. Roy demanded severe repercussions for investigative agencies that falter on deadlines or fail to gather necessary evidence, recommending personnel dismissal and criminal prosecution. The tragic case at RG Kar Medical College saw a post-graduate doctor allegedly raped and murdered, resulting in a civic volunteer's arrest and ongoing police actions.
