Haitian Prison Break: Chaos Amid Humanitarian Crisis

A prison break in the Haitian city of Saint-Marc left 12 inmates dead on Friday, according to Mayor Myriam Fievre. This marks the third such incident in recent months amid a prolonged humanitarian crisis driven by gang violence.

State Prosecutor Venson Francois reported that the situation on Friday afternoon was under control at the prison, which housed approximately 540 inmates. However, Francois urged the local population to stay vigilant for potential escapees. 'The situation is under control but the results are catastrophic,' Francois said, noting that all the police dormitories and archives had been set on fire, yet the inmates’ cells remained untouched.

Local official Walter Montas mentioned the incident stemmed from a spontaneous protest against dire conditions, including lack of food and poor health infrastructure. National police have yet to respond to information requests about the event. Over 7,500 people were detained in Haitian prisons as of June, significantly down from nearly 12,000 due to prior mass jailbreaks.
