At least 13 farmers were brutally killed by armed men in north-central Nigeria's Niger state, local officials reported Thursday.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred on Wednesday. Local government official Akilu Isyaku suggested that herders and kidnappers might be involved, suspecting the farmers were targeted for providing intelligence to authorities.
The region has been a battleground for clashes between herders and farmers over land and water, with hundreds killed this year alone. The violence escalated as both sides now wield smuggled guns and has also taken on a religious dimension. Kidnappings for ransom are common, and security forces often arrive too late to prevent attacks or make arrests.
