In a shocking incident in Maharashtra, a 35-year-old man named Mansur Shaikh has been detained by the police for allegedly raping and murdering a 70-year-old woman in Latur district. The crime came to light on Monday after neighbors reported a foul odour emanating from Shaikh's house in Bheta, within Ausa tehsil. Initial investigations have revealed that the elderly woman was sexually assaulted and then strangled to death. The body, already decomposing, suggests that the crime took place two days earlier.
According to the police, Shaikh had been living alone after his wife and mother left him. The victim, who resided in Borgaon, a village 10 kilometers from Bheta, had been staying in the village for a few days. Shaikh allegedly took her to his house, committed the crime, and then remained in the house with the body.
The police are in the process of registering a case of rape and murder at Bheta police station. Shaikh, who is reportedly mentally unstable, has been detained and will be formally arrested shortly.
