An Israeli drone strike on a car crossing through a Syrian checkpoint near the border with Lebanon on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of three Palestinian fighters and one member of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, according to two security sources. The sources confirmed the vehicle was not transporting weapons.
Local Syrian official Abdo al-Taqi told a Syrian radio station that the vehicle was targeted Wednesday morning on the road between the Syrian capital Damascus and Lebanon's capital Beirut, resulting in four fatalities. Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, and other armed factions have previously launched rockets and drones at Israel from southern Lebanon, maintaining strong ties with Iran and Syria's government.
Israel has not commented on this incident. Typically, Israel acknowledges strikes in Lebanon but rarely for those accused in Syria. Israel has targeted Syrian weapon shipments and military infrastructure for years, increasing attacks since October. Wednesday's drone strike followed an Israeli airstrike on a pickup truck in northeast Lebanon, believed to be transporting military equipment.
