In a fervent appeal, Supreme Court Bar Association president and senior advocate Kapil Sibal on Friday urged Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud to ensure the appointment of more women judges in the higher judiciary.
Speaking at a farewell function for Justice Hima Kohli, Sibal emphasized Justice Kohli's remarkable career and noted the significant lack of women in the apex court. With her retirement, the number of supreme court judges drops to 33 against the sanctioned strength of 34, with only two women judges remaining.
Sibal underscored the success of women in various sectors and questioned why women lawyers excelling in complex legal issues are not absorbed into the judiciary. He called for collective action to address the male-dominated legal profession, advocating for the appointment of more women judges in the high courts and supreme court.
