Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has demanded capital punishment for the perpetrators involved in the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

Athawale, the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, underscored the need for stringent legislation to address such crimes and called for trials to be conducted in fast-track courts. He stated that the accused should be convicted within six months to a year.

Following the incident, the Calcutta High Court handed the investigation over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Allegations have also emerged against the former principal of the medical college, who has been questioned by the central agency. The tragic case has led to widespread protests across the country, with various societal groups demanding justice.
