Assam Cabinet Approves Key Recommendations for Indigenous Protection

The Assam cabinet has decided to implement 57 out of 67 recommendations from the Justice Biplab Sarma committee to protect the cultural, social, and linguistic identity of the indigenous people. Announcements regarding these implementations will be made soon, and the measures will be effective by April 15, 2025.

The Assam cabinet on Wednesday took significant steps to implement 57 of the 67 recommendations made by the Justice Biplab Sarma committee concerning Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. This decision aims to protect and safeguard the land, language, and culture of Assam's indigenous population, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said at a press conference in Lakhimpur.

The Clause 6 of the Assam Accord mandates appropriate constitutional, legislative, and administrative safeguards for the cultural, social, and linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people. 'A decision has been taken to implement 85 per cent of the recommendations, and the remaining will be taken up with the central government,' Sarma stated.

The recommendations will be publicized in the coming days, and a Group of Ministers will engage with the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and other organizations. The cabinet has set an April 15, 2025 deadline for implementing the recommendations, marking a historic milestone for Assam, Sarma added.
