Over the past three months, Hong Kong journalists and their families have faced significant harassment and intimidation both online and in person, according to the Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA).
HKJA chairperson Selina Cheng described the threats as unprecedented and a severe blow to press freedom in Hong Kong. Authorities, including Under Secretary for Security Michael Cheuk, have urged victims to report incidents to law enforcement agencies.
The harassment targeted 15 journalists, their families, and associates, and included anonymous complaints from self-proclaimed 'patriots', leading to serious concerns over the erosion of autonomy guaranteed in Hong Kong's 1997 handover agreement.
