The Supreme Court began hearing a suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of a postgraduate medic at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Tuesday.
A bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, along with Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, is overseeing the proceedings.
The apex court previously noted the troubling absence of the 'challan', a critical document in the postmortem process, from the records submitted, prompting a request for clarification from the West Bengal government.
This follows the Supreme Court's earlier criticism of the Kolkata Police's handling of the case, which involved delays in registering the doctor's unnatural death. The investigation has since been transferred to the CBI.
The court also established a National Task Force to devise safety protocols for healthcare workers in response to the nationwide protests triggered by this 'horrific' incident.
