In a noteworthy judgment, a court in Jamia Nagar's Batla House has convicted a woman named Shaheen for electricity theft. The court was presided over by Assistant Sessions Judge Vivek Kumar Gulia, who found the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case against Shaheen, who was running a beauty parlour on rented premises, was registered under Section 135 of the Electricity Act by the Jamia Nagar Police Station. This section deals specifically with electricity theft, including illegal connections and meter tampering, and can lead to a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment or a significant fine.
The court's order cited testimony from property dealer Zafar Abbas and other substantial evidence that confirmed Shaheen's illegal tapping from a BSES pole. A fine of Rs 1.87 lakh was raised for the theft, which remains unpaid. The court has scheduled further arguments on civil liability and sentencing for September 27.
