Egypt Arms Somalia Amid Rising Tensions with Ethiopia
An Egyptian warship has delivered significant weaponry to Somalia, escalating tensions with Ethiopia. This move follows Egypt and Somalia's growing alliance against Ethiopia's actions in the region, including a contested port deal with Somaliland. The arms delivery has raised concerns over potential misuse, particularly by the al Shabaab group.
An Egyptian warship delivered a substantial cache of weapons to Somalia, heightening tensions with Ethiopia, port and military officials announced on Monday. The second significant arms shipment this year follows a growing alliance between Egypt and Somalia based on mutual distrust of Ethiopia, which has been exacerbated by a contentious port deal between Ethiopia and Somaliland.
The arrival of anti-aircraft guns and artillery has intensified concerns and security measures, with security forces blocking off the quayside as the weapons were transported to a defense ministry building. Nasra Bashir Ali, an official in the Somali Prime Minister's office, shared a photo of the Defence Minister overseeing the unloading of the ship.
In a statement, Somaliland's foreign affairs ministry expressed concern that the weapons might fall into the hands of al Shabaab militants. Egyptian media highlighted warnings from Egypt's embassy in Mogadishu advising citizens against traveling to Somaliland due to the volatile security situation. Ethiopia has yet to comment, but in the past, it has pledged not to remain passive amid regional destabilization efforts.
