Akshay Shinde, the accused in a high-profile school sexual assault case, was shot dead during a police transfer on Monday. Shinde, who was being moved from Taloja jail to Badlapur on new charges filed by his ex-wife, grabbed a police revolver and fired at officers, injuring one. The police retaliated, resulting in Shinde's death.
The Central Crime Unit of Thane city had obtained a transfer warrant for Shinde in connection with an FIR registered at Badlapur police station. The charges included sections 377, 324, 323, and 504 of the IPC. During the transfer, Shinde managed to fire three rounds, injuring API Nilesh More. Officers fired back in self-defense, fatally wounding him.
Shinde and the injured officer were immediately rushed to Kalwa civic hospital. API More was later transferred to Jupiter hospital, while Shinde was declared dead on arrival. An investigation led by a 15-member special team will look into the case, including sexual assault charges under the POCSO Act filed by his ex-wife and related incidents involving minors.
