Russian forces have advanced at their fastest rate in two years, despite Ukrainian attempts to divert them by incurring into Russia's Kursk region.

The Kremlin announced on Wednesday a positive battlefield dynamic for its forces in eastern Ukraine, claiming the capture of two more villages, Hostre and Hryhorivka. This marks a significant advancement, as Russian forces appear to close in on a longstanding Ukrainian stronghold.

In August, Russian forces made their fastest advance in two years, despite a Ukrainian incursion into Russia's Kursk region intended to divert Moscow's troops. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the positive development while addressing reports that Russian forces had encircled Vuhledar, a fortified mining town crucial to Ukrainian defenses since 2022.

Russia's Defence Ministry reported the takeover of two small villages in the Donetsk region, although Reuters could not independently verify these battlefield claims. The Russian-installed head of Donetsk, Denis Pushilin, also confirmed ongoing fighting in Vuhledar and the capture of Ukrainsk, intensifying the conflict in the region.
