A recent confrontation has unfolded near the disputed Scarborough Shoal as a Philippine fisheries bureau aircraft was shadowed by a Chinese navy helicopter, the National Security Council (NSC) confirmed on Wednesday. Despite the interference, the aircraft completed its patrol mission.

This incident represents the latest clash in a series of encounters between the Philippines and China over contested areas in the South China Sea, most notably the Scarborough Shoal. China's actions were deemed violations of air safety regulations by the NSC. The Chinese embassy in Manila has yet to comment.

With rich fish stocks and a picturesque turquoise lagoon, the Scarborough Shoal is highly coveted. Notably, a 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration invalidated China's extensive claims over the South China Sea, though China disregards this ruling.

Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro has demanded China withdraw its vessels from the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), accusing Beijing of meddling in its defense activities. China, meanwhile, expressed alarm over the deployment of a U.S. missile system in the Philippines, deeming it a regional security threat.

In related news, China's recent launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean has heightened global security concerns. Philippine military chief Romeo Brawner has expressed approval for the continued presence of the U.S. Typhon missile system in the Philippines.
