Inquiry Commission Report on Gorukhuti Eviction Submitted

The Assam government's one-man inquiry commission submitted its report on the 2021 Gorukhuti eviction drive that resulted in two deaths. The report by retired high court judge BD Agarwal outlined 16 key recommendations, highlighting deficiencies in land regulations and the excessive use of force. The eviction displaced over 7,000 people.

The one-man inquiry commission, established by the Assam government to investigate the Gorukhuti eviction drive that left two individuals dead in 2021, has submitted its detailed report to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Comprising 319 pages and 16 key recommendations, the report, overseen by retired high court judge BD Agarwal, was formally handed over after considering 55 memoranda and cross-examining 44 witnesses. It criticized deficiencies in the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation and recommended re-examining clauses regarding the use of force during such operations.

The eviction, conducted over September 20 and 23, 2021, resulted in the destruction of around 1,200-1,400 homes and left over 7,000 people homeless. The report suggests that notices for eviction should allow sufficient time for voluntary relocation to avoid excessive force. Following the incident, the state initiated an agriculture project in the affected area.
