In a landmark decision, the Gujarat High Court has ruled in favor of anganwadi workers and helpers, directing both the state and Union governments to recognize them as equivalent to regular government employees. This judgment sets a new precedent for the employment rights of thousands across India.
The court highlighted clear discrimination faced by anganwadi workers and helpers compared to other government employees. Justice Nikhil S. Kariel emphasized the need for policy formulation to ensure these workers are absorbed into government service and receive the benefits of regularization.
The ruling followed multiple petitions highlighting years of inadequate pay and lack of benefits despite fulfilling crucial roles under the Integrated Child Development Services scheme. The court order mandates policy implementation within six months, aiming to rectify long-standing disparities.
