The United States has imposed sanctions on a Sudanese paramilitary leader, Abdel Rahman Juma Barakallah, for his active role in committing violence against civilians in West Darfur. This measure reflects Washington's stance on holding accountable those responsible for human rights abuses in the troubled region.
According to the US Department of Treasury, Barakallah led the Rapid Support Forces' operations in West Darfur, engaging in actions that include sexual violence and ethnically-motivated attacks. The United Nations and international rights organizations have described these acts as war crimes, further intensifying calls for justice.
The conflict, rooted in April 2023 tensions between Sudan's military and paramilitary factions, has resulted in significant humanitarian crises, including over 20,000 deaths and millions of displacements. The US urges peace talks while maintaining pressure through sanctions on RSF leaders like Barakallah, who also faces consequences such as visa restrictions and property blockades.
