The Government of India has reimposed the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in six police station areas across Manipur, including the violence-prone Jiribam district, heightening an already tense environment.
AFSPA enables the military with broad authority in designated "disturbed" areas to search, arrest, and use lethal force if deemed necessary to maintain public order. The decision followed continuing ethnic strife between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. This ongoing unrest has led to over 200 deaths and displaced thousands.
The reactivation of AFSPA comes after it was lifted from most parts of the state in April 2022. However, recent incidents, including militant attacks resulting in several fatalities and civilian kidnappings, prompted the Union Home Ministry to initiate the mandate anew. This move has sparked protests and demands for the Act's total revocation across northeastern India and Jammu and Kashmir.
