In a bid to restore law and order, police in Beed district, Maharashtra, are rigorously scrutinizing all issued weapon licenses to ensure that each holder has a genuine need for a firearm, a senior police official confirmed.
Beed Superintendent of Police Navneet Kanwat announced on Monday that individuals whose photos or videos displaying firearms are spreading on social media will face First Information Reports. This action follows the alarming murder of Massajog village sarpanch, Santosh Deshmukh, on December 9, and related extortion incidents.
SP Kanwat, recently appointed after a political stir over the case, stated that wherever a necessity for a weapon license is absent, license cancellations will be recommended. The police department is committed to preserving order, although the final authority on issuing licenses lies with the district collector.
