The Income Tax Bill, 2025, aims to replace the outdated Income Tax Act of 1961 with a more streamlined approach to taxation. The new bill, introduced in Parliament, simplifies language, avoids redundancies, and enhances clarity for taxpayers.

Contrary to initial speculations, this bill does not propose any new taxes. It merely consolidates existing taxability provisions from the 1961 Act into a coherent, modernized structure consisting of 536 sections over 622 pages, compared to the former 298 sections.

This legislation introduces a 'tax year' concept, replacing complex terminologies like 'Previous year' and 'Assessment year.' Scheduled to come into effect on April 1, 2026, the bill promises clarity, especially with its new structure that uses tables and simplified formulas.
