India Poised for Major Missile Export to the Philippines Amid Regional Tensions
India is set to finalize a deal to sell short-range Akash missiles to the Philippines, estimated at over $200 million, amid growing regional tensions with China. This follows their earlier BrahMos missile sale, marking India's strategic push in defense exports to counter China's influence.
India is on the verge of finalizing a high-profile defense export deal with the Philippines, valued at more than $200 million, involving the sale of short-range Akash missiles. Sources informed Reuters about the anticipated sale, highlighting its significance as New Delhi’s second major defense contract with Manila.
Amid escalating tensions with China, the surface-to-air Akash missile system has caught the interest of the Philippines, aiming to strengthen its military capabilities. With a 25 km range, the Akash system was previously sold to Armenia, but the upcoming deal with the Philippines is expected to be larger in scope.
Despite the potential sale, official comments remain sparse, with Indian and Philippine defense entities withholding details. However, the transaction underscores India's efforts to enhance its defense production and exports, bolstering its position against Chinese military prowess.
