A German court has convicted three individuals in a blackmail attempt targeting the family of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher. The ringleader, aged 53, was sentenced to three years in prison for spearheading the scheme.

The court in Wuppertal found that the trio attempted to extort money from Schumacher's family by threatening to release videos and photos of the retired racing driver, who has remained out of the public eye following a severe brain injury from a 2013 skiing accident.

While the ringleader received a prison sentence, his son and another accomplice, a former security firm employee, received suspended sentences. The Schumacher family, known for their strict privacy, previously won compensation from a German magazine over a fabricated interview.
