Soaring Backlog: India's Legal System Under Strain

India's pending court cases increased by nearly 33 lakh from December 2022 to February 7, 2023, as reported by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. Despite the judiciary's exclusive domain, the government aims to aid faster case resolution under Article 21 through the National Mission for Justice.

The Indian judiciary faces an escalating challenge as pending cases surged by approximately 33 lakh between December 2022 and February 7, 2023, according to the government.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal informed the Rajya Sabha that pending cases increased from over 4.87 crore at the end of last year to 5.20 crore in early February. The judiciary maintains the authority to resolve these in a timely manner.

While the burden lies primarily on the judiciary, the government is actively creating supportive environments for quicker adjudication. This commitment is part of the National Mission for Justice, in line with constitutional mandates to enhance judicial efficiency.
