Delhi High Court Seeks Guidelines for STD Testing in Sexual Offences

The Delhi High Court has asked for responses from relevant authorities regarding the formulation of guidelines for testing accused individuals and minor survivors of sexual offenses for sexually transmitted diseases. Petitioners aim to establish a framework ensuring the health and rights of child survivors.

In a significant step towards safeguarding the health rights of minors affected by sexual offenses, the Delhi High Court has issued notices to central governmental bodies and the Delhi Police. The court, led by Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, is addressing a plea that calls for comprehensive guidelines for STD testing.

The petition, represented by advocate Kajal Dalal, urges the creation of a robust legal framework to ensure timely medical interventions for child survivors. This initiative aims to detail the roles of various stakeholders, including investigators, hospitals, and child welfare committees, in addressing potential health complications arising from sexual offenses.

The plea highlights the gap in immediate medical aid for child survivors, especially concerning incurable STIs and STDs such as HIV/AIDS. The requested guidelines are seen as crucial for ensuring psycho-social support and timely medical aid, aiming to mitigate health risks for vulnerable minors.
