A Delhi court will announce on February 25 its decision on the sentencing of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, convicted in a murder case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The prosecution demands the death penalty, arguing that Kumar incited mob violence resulting in multiple deaths.
Special Judge Kaveri Baweja asked Kumar's counsel to submit written arguments within two days. The court also ordered a psychiatric evaluation of Kumar, currently held in Tihar jail, as per a Supreme Court directive involving cases that could result in capital punishment.
The case, initially lodged at Punjabi Bagh Police Station and later taken over by a special investigation team, alleges that Kumar played a central role in orchestrating the violence that led to the deaths of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh. Kumar's appeal against his prior sentence of life imprisonment remains pending before the Supreme Court.
