New Zealand's crackdown on gangs is showing significant early success, with Police seizing 76 gang patches, 67 firearms, and laying 337 charges for insignia breaches in the first three months since the new Gangs Act came into force.

Police Minister Mark Mitchell and Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith have praised law enforcement for their efforts in holding gang members accountable and enhancing public safety.

Crackdown on Gang Intimidation and Crime

The new legislation is designed to dismantle gang influence, particularly their use of insignia and firearms to intimidate law-abiding citizens.

"We all know how a gang member earns their patch. Before these laws, gang members felt empowered and used their patches to intimidate New Zealanders. Now, with the Gangs Act in place, we've seen patches disappear from our streets," said Mr. Mitchell.

Police data shows a 52% increase in firearms seizures compared to the same period last year, underscoring the effectiveness of the new enforcement tools available to officers.

Strong Stance on Gangs and Crime Reduction Goals

Mr. Goldsmith reiterated that the Government remains committed to being tough on gangs and reducing crime rates.

"These laws are meant to be uncomfortable for gangs. If you don't like it, don't break the law – it's that simple. Gang members want the rights of being a New Zealander, but refuse to accept the responsibilities."

The crackdown is part of a broader strategy to reduce serious violent crime by 20,000 fewer victims by 2029 and cut serious repeat youth offending by 15%.

New Zealanders can expect continued Police action as authorities work to restore order and ensure public safety in communities affected by gang violence.
