India's Social Security Strides Transforming Workforce

India's social security initiatives have doubled coverage to 48.8% by 2024 from 24.4% in 2021. India has witnessed a significant expansion in social security coverage, increasing from 24.4% of the population in 2021 to 48.8% in 2024, according to Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. This shift underscores the impact of recent labor reforms aimed at modernizing workforce policies and facilitating business operations.

Reforming 29 labor laws into four simplified Labour Codes, the Indian government has enhanced labor welfare, universalized wages, and provided safer working conditions. Initiatives like the e-Shram portal, which registers over 300 million unorganized workers, and its new mobile app, demonstrate the government's commitment to improving the last-mile delivery of social benefits.

In collaboration with global and regional partners, India continues to strengthen its role in advocating for social justice. The country, a founding member of the International Labour Organization, is preparing for a major regional dialogue on social justice in 2025, reinforcing its commitment alongside a growing coalition of international partners.
