SAPS Cracks Down on Illegal Mining and Undocumented Foreign Nationals in Limpopo

The South African Police Service (SAPS), in collaboration with the Tactical Joint Operational Command (TACJOC), launched Operation Vala Umgodi on Saturday.

Limpopo police intensified efforts to curb illegal mining and undocumented immigration over the weekend, resulting in the arrest of 35 individuals during a large-scale operation.

The targeted crackdown led to the apprehension of five illegal sand miners and 30 undocumented foreign nationals suspected of being involved in illicit activities.

Illegal Sand Mining Arrests

Authorities detained five male suspects in the Rakgoadi policing precinct under the Sekhukhune District after they were caught loading sand into trucks. Law enforcement confiscated four shovels as part of the operation. Illegal sand mining poses significant environmental and economic threats, prompting a zero-tolerance approach from SAPS.

Undocumented Foreign Nationals Arrested

During the intelligence-driven operation, SAPS arrested six undocumented foreign nationals in Bergenek village, within the Westenburg policing area. The individuals, aged between 18 and 37, are suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities.

A separate operation in the Vhembe District led to the arrest of 17 undocumented foreign nationals in Nancefield and Musina CBD, within the Musina policing precinct. These individuals, aged between 18 and 44, were detained for violating the Immigration Act and are set to face immediate deportation in accordance with immigration laws.

Meanwhile, SAPS officers in the Mopani District arrested an additional seven undocumented foreign nationals, aged between 24 and 40, in the Tzaneen area.

Authorities' Commitment to Combat Illegal Activities

Police emphasized that these operations are part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal mining, environmental degradation, and immigration violations. SAPS has vowed to continue monitoring hotspots and taking decisive action against criminal networks operating in the province.

The arrested individuals will be processed according to South African law, with the illegal miners expected to face criminal charges, while undocumented foreign nationals will be subject to deportation. Authorities encourage communities to report illegal mining activities and any suspicious individuals to local law enforcement agencies.

The crackdown highlights the SAPS' determination to uphold the rule of law and protect South Africa's natural resources from illicit exploitation.
