Singapore experienced a dramatic increase in financial losses due to scams, amounting to SGD 1.1 billion (USD 822 million) last year, according to recent data released by the Singapore Police Force. This marks a substantial rise of 70.6 percent compared to 2023 figures.
The number of recorded scams rose by 10.6 percent, reaching 51,501 cases up from 46,563 cases the previous year. Of particular concern is the growing role of cryptocurrency in these scams, accounting for 24.3 percent of total losses, a significant jump from 6.8 percent in 2023.
Despite law enforcement's efforts, high-value cases remain a major challenge. Scam instances involving losses exceeding SGD 100,000 constituted 3.3 percent of cases but accounted for 70.8 percent of total losses. The Anti-Scam Command's initiatives have somewhat mitigated losses and recovered substantial amounts, yet the financial impact remains profound.
