On Tuesday, the Joint Parliamentary Committee initiated discussions on the contentious 'One Nation, One Election' bills, featuring insights from former Chief Justice of India U U Lalit and ex-Law Commission Chairperson Ritu Raj Awasthi. The consultations aim to assess the viability and implications of simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly elections.

Critics, including Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, argue that the proposal may undermine democratic tenets, such as legislative tenure and civic rights. Opposition voices fear the concept could reduce elected officials' accountability, given a potential five-year interval between elections.

The committee, chaired by BJP MP P P Chaudhary, has engaged several stakeholders and experts to deliberate the feasibility of the initiative. With the Union Cabinet's endorsement, the government has tabled two related bills in Lok Sabha, including one seeking to amend the Constitution.
