Diplomatic Thaw: Ethiopia-Somalia Talks Aim to Resolve Disputes
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited Somalia's capital to discuss improving relations with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. This follows tensions over Ethiopia's plans to lease coastline in Somaliland. Both countries have agreed to negotiate for Ethiopia's access to the sea. The visit aims to strengthen bilateral and regional diplomacy.
In a move toward improved diplomatic ties, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed arrived in Mogadishu to engage in talks with Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. This significant meeting follows chilly relations due to Ethiopia's contentious coastal lease plans.
The tension escalated earlier this year when Ethiopia sought to lease parts of Somaliland’s coast, prompting Somalia to accuse its neighbor of infringing on its sovereignty. Talks have since been brokered by Turkey to resolve the maritime access issues.
With photographs capturing the leaders' warm gestures, this summit marks a pivotal stride in strengthening Ethiopian-Somalian relations amid ongoing regional conflicts and internal challenges faced by Somalia's government.
