Kerala vehemently opposes the central government's decision to permit offshore mineral mining, with Industries Minister P Rajeeve voicing strong objections. The state has formally protested three times, highlighting significant environmental and social concerns, as emphasized during various governmental meetings.

The contentious issue was discussed at the Central Geological Programming Board meeting, where the Union Mines Secretary acknowledged Kerala's stance. The National Institute of Oceanography has been tasked with studying the environmental impact of such mining activities.

Kerala’s fishing community, backed by major political parties, initiated a 24-hour coastal hartal in protest. The halt in fishing activities disrupted operations across the state, particularly in designated areas slated for mining. Further demonstrations, including a Parliament march, are planned.
