Alarming Rise: Farmer Suicides in Maharashtra

Maharashtra's Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Makarand Jadhav-Patil acknowledged the alarming rate of farmer suicides in the state, with eight per day on average over the past 56 months. He highlighted the higher occurrences in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Amravati divisions and detailed state efforts to support affected families.

Maharashtra's Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Makarand Jadhav-Patil has confirmed that the state has seen an average of eight farmer suicides a day over the past 56 months. The acknowledgment came during a question by NCP MLC Shivajirao Garje in the legislative council's question hour.

The minister noted that farmer suicides were particularly high in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Amravati divisions. He detailed various factors contributing to these suicides, as well as the government's initiatives to assist the families impacted by these tragedies.

In the previous year, there were 952 farmer suicides in the Marathwada division alone, with 1,069 in the Amravati division. Jadhav-Patil mentioned that while financial aid has been approved for many, not all affected families have received the assistance yet. The government remains committed to providing support to these families.
