Major Drug Bust at Fairvale Secondary School: MEC Commends Swift SAPS Action

In a decisive crackdown on illegal activities within schools, KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, has praised the South African Police Service (SAPS) for their swift and effective operation at Fairvale Secondary School in Wentworth, south of Durban. The large-scale operation, conducted on Friday, led to the confiscation of illegal substances and a significant amount of cash, reinforcing efforts to maintain a safe and conducive learning environment.

"We will not idly stand by while drugs and illegal activities threaten the safety and education of our children. Schools should be a place of learning, not crime," Hlomuka asserted.

He further urged parents and guardians to take an active role in monitoring their children's activities and associates.

"We ask that parents be intentional about ensuring that their children stay away from the use of illegal substances and any criminal activities. The safety and well-being of our learners require a joint effort between the department, law enforcement, and families," he added.

The MEC also acknowledged the collaborative efforts between educators, law enforcement agencies, and community leaders in tackling issues of school safety. He encouraged the continued enforcement of safety measures, including routine searches, educational awareness programs, and community interventions to prevent further incidents.
