The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly descended into chaos on Tuesday as members from across political lines vociferously protested against the lathi charge and detention of Jal Shakti department's daily wage employees. These workers, demanding overdue wages and jobs' regularisation, have become a focal point of unrest in the state.
BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa was at the forefront, bringing attention to the massive protests that faced police action. He was supported by BJP peers, while National Conference's Mir Saifullah and B A Veeri, along with Congress' Nizamuddin Bhat, echoed the call for governmental intervention.
Despite Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather's attempts to maintain order and proceed with the agenda, the assembly was fraught with interruptions as members were adamant about addressing the workers' plight. The Jal Shakti employees, struggling with unpaid wages for over seven years and incomplete regularisation promises, threaten to strike on March 20 unless their demands are met.
