Separatist militants from the Baloch Liberation Army have stormed a train in southwestern Pakistan, taking 214 passengers hostage, police reported Tuesday. The group has demanded the release of Baloch prisoners, threatening to execute hostages if their demands are ignored. Nearly 350 passengers are reportedly safe.
The BLA attack occurred in a tunnel, leading to the train driver's death and trapping the train with passengers, including women and children. In response, Pakistani security forces have launched a major rescue operation, deploying helicopters and special units into the mountainous area where exchanges of gunfire have been reported.
The militants seek Balochistan province's independence, citing governmental exploitation of local resources. The conflict remains tense with threats of execution looming, while Pakistan's interior minister denounced the attack, promising no concessions. Emergency measures have been enacted, highlighting ongoing regional instability.
