In a dramatic escalation, separatist militants from the Baloch Liberation Army have taken 35 passengers hostage after targeting a train in southwestern Pakistan, according to local police reports on Tuesday.
The BLA, which seeks independence for Balochistan bordering Afghanistan and Iran, destroyed the train tracks, trapping the vehicle within a tunnel. While 350 passengers escaped unharmed, the group claims to hold 214 hostages, threatening to execute them if their demands are not met.
Security forces launched a massive operation utilizing helicopters and special forces. An official indicated that 80 passengers were rescued, while militants remain surrounded. The BLA insists on a prisoner exchange, threatening further violence. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attacks and emphasized no concessions will be made.
