Congress MP Gowaal Kagada Padavi on Wednesday made a significant plea in the Lok Sabha by demanding the inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This move aims to safeguard the unique cultural heritage of the region amid concerns of external influence.
The Sixth Schedule, governed by Articles 244(2) and 275(1) of the Constitution, provides special administration for tribal regions in specific northeastern states. The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes had already recommended Ladakh's inclusion back in 2019. However, despite previous calls, the home ministry remains hesitant, emphasizing the region's strategic location bordered by Pakistan and China.
Gowaal Kagada Padavi highlighted the risk of cultural domination by external business interests without this protection. Inclusion under this schedule would grant Ladakh the autonomy to form elected councils to manage laws affecting tribal life, potentially boosting local governance in areas like agriculture and social customs.
