In a compelling address at the launch of his book, 'Why the Constitution Matters,' former Chief Justice of India, Justice D. Y. Chandrachud, emphasized the Indian Constitution's role as a dynamic conversation influenced by disagreement and experience. Speaking at the School of Law and Liberal Arts, ADYPU in Pune, Maharashtra, Justice Chandrachud highlighted how constitutional values are perpetually evolving through dialogue.

Justice Chandrachud challenged the notion that judges possess final answers, underscoring that the Constitution does not eliminate disagreement but provides a framework for living with it. He drew from his extensive experience on the Bench to stress humility, the power of language, and the limits of individual knowledge. He remarked, 'Every sentence has consequences. Every pause carries meaning.'

Discussing the motivation behind his book, Justice Chandrachud noted that speeches extend the reach of legal thought beyond courtrooms, facilitating reflection and dialogue. He also reflected on India's tradition of social reform and stressed the unfinished business of constitutional work, such as addressing marital rape. The event concluded with an interactive discussion, reinforcing the view of the Constitution as a living dialogue.
