Panama Canal's Gate of Opportunity: Lower Fees Spark Surge in Transit
The Panama Canal has reduced its transit fees by 15% compared to last year, thanks to increased cargo capacity. A previous drought led to restrictions and long waits, but these have been lifted, allowing daily vessel crossings to increase significantly.
The Panama Canal has announced a 15% reduction in transit fees compared to last year's rates, as the waterway expands its capacity to accommodate more cargo. This was confirmed by Ricaurte Vasquez, head of the Panama Canal Authority, during a recent video conference.
Previously, severe drought conditions between late 2023 and early 2024 necessitated passage restrictions on one of the world's busiest waterways. These restrictions led to long waiting lines and increased fees. However, since the third quarter, the canal has lifted restrictions, boosting daily vessel crossings.
In its latest monthly bulletin, the Panama Canal reported an average of 34.8 vessels transiting the waterway in February, up from 32.6 ships in January, highlighting a significant rise in activity.
