In a surprising turn of events, the Karnataka government has rescinded its earlier directive asking the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate potential lapses by police officers at Kempegowda International Airport linked to actor Ranya Rao's gold smuggling case.
The order initiating the CID probe was issued late Monday but was reversed by Wednesday. The change came as Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta commenced an inquiry into the potential involvement of Ranya's stepfather, K Ramachandra Rao, a high-ranking police official, in the alleged smuggling activities.
Ramachandra Rao, who currently holds the position of Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation, is being scrutinized for possible misuse of protocol facilities. The case gained considerable attention following the discovery of gold bars valued at Rs 12.56 crore at the airport, followed by the recovery of gold jewellery and cash from Ranya's residence.
