In a move that has stirred public debate, Bangladesh's interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has once again extended magistracy powers to the military for another 60 days. This extension comes as the nation grapples with widespread protests and vandalism, heightening concerns over law and order.
The Public Administration Ministry announced that commissioned officers at the rank of captain and above will continue to exercise authority nationwide. This includes naval and air force officers aiding civil administration, as well as those serving in the Bangladesh Coast Guard and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
Operation Devil Hunt, the military-backed crackdown on unrest following the ousting of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League, has seen significant confrontations between protesters and the authorities. Despite the military's detachment from policing duties, a return to normalcy remains elusive, prompting a call for enhanced police restructuring and public safety reassurance.
