In a remarkable display of tech-savvy policing, authorities in Akola city, Maharashtra, have successfully returned 200 lost or stolen mobile phones to their rightful owners. The devices, valued at Rs 41 lakh, were handed over during an event organized by the city's police cyber cell.

The recovery was made possible through the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal, which has become an instrumental tool in tracking lost phones, according to Bachchan Singh, the Superintendent of Police. Since March 2023, the combined efforts of the cyber cell and various police stations have resulted in locating more than 754 mobile phones.

Emphasizing the transformative power of technology in law enforcement, SP Singh urged citizens to report any theft or loss of mobile phones promptly on the CEIR portal, enhancing the cyber cell's ability to trace devices when a new SIM card is detected.
