The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued notices to Tamil Nadu's police chief and Tirunelveli district collector on Tuesday, responding to the murder of a retired sub-inspector reportedly killed over his activism.
Suo motu cognisance was taken by the NHRC based on claims that the ex-officer, battling against Waqf land encroachment, received threats. Allegations of ineffective police action have surfaced, suggesting a disturbing hand-in-glove situation.
The NHRC is demanding explanations within four weeks, voicing concerns over potential human rights violations and echoing the family’s frustration over reported police negligence.
