A massive civil defence exercise, named Operation Abhyaas, was conducted across various Indian states and Union Territories in a concerted effort to enhance emergency preparedness and response capabilities. Simulating hostile scenarios such as air raids and rescue operations, the drill was initiated by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The exercise followed a major military operation targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan. It underscores the heightened alert in the country after a terror attack killed 26 civilians in Pahalgam on April 22. The drills spanned locations including Delhi, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu, involving security personnel and civil defence volunteers.

In Delhi, sound of sirens prompted practice evacuations, while in Mumbai, the drill was staged at the historical Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. The nationwide initiative evaluates civilian readiness for emergency situations, focusing on swift evacuations and crisis management protocols.
