President Droupadi Murmu has sanctioned the prosecution of RJD chief Lalu Prasad in connection with the money laundering case related to the alleged railways land-for-jobs scam, officials reported on Thursday.
This decision was made under section 197(1) of the CrPC, now part of Section 218 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The Enforcement Directorate, which has been investigating the case, charged the 76-year-old former Bihar chief minister, his son Tejashwi Yadav, and other family members last August.
The charges stem from a CBI FIR accusing Prasad, during his time as Union Railway Minister, of engaging in corrupt practices between 2004-2009. Allegedly, land parcels were transferred as bribes for jobs in the Indian Railways, with family members involved in these transactions.
