In a strategic move to reinforce self-reliance and innovation in India’s defence ecosystem, the Indian Army, in coordination with the Integrated Defence Staff, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force, hosted a Curtain Raiser event today for the much-anticipated Tri-Services Academia Technology Symposium (TSATS) 2025. The event was held at the iconic Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, setting the stage for the main symposium scheduled for 22–23 September 2025.

Guided by the theme "Vivek va Anusandhan se Vijay" (Wisdom and Innovation for Victory), the initiative marks a bold step in bridging the gap between India’s armed forces and the academic community, with the shared goal of advancing indigenous defence technologies under the larger vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Symposium to Foster Services-Academia R&D Synergy

The primary objective of the symposium is to forge a synergistic ecosystem that integrates academic research with the operational and technological needs of the Indian Armed Forces. By drawing on the scientific potential within universities, research centres, and technical institutes, the event aims to establish a robust, collaborative platform that contributes to long-term defence self-reliance.

“This initiative is a vital part of our national security architecture. Innovation must not be limited to laboratories—it must reach the battlefield,” remarked a senior defence official at the event.

Dedicated Portal Launched to Facilitate Nationwide Academic Participation

As a key component of the Curtain Raiser, a dedicated digital portal was officially launched. The portal enables academic institutions across India to:

  • Register representatives as symposium attendees

  • Submit project proposals or technology exhibits for review

  • Participate in thematic seminars, workshops, and panel discussions

This initiative democratizes access to defence collaboration, ensuring that institutions from all corners of the country—from IITs and NITs to regional engineering colleges—can contribute meaningfully.

Review and Recognition of Promising Defence-Tech Innovations

Submissions made via the portal will be reviewed by subject matter experts (SMEs) from each of the three Services. Shortlisted proposals and exhibits will be showcased at the final symposium in September and will feature in one-on-one mentoring sessions with senior defence representatives.

Highlights of the upcoming main event include:

  • Seminar tracks on emerging technologies such as AI, autonomous systems, quantum computing, space tech, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and advanced materials

  • Exhibition of shortlisted innovations by academic teams

  • Panel discussions featuring thought leaders from academia, DRDO, and service innovation units

  • Valedictory session awards, recognizing the most impactful contributions

Strengthening National Defence Through Indigenous Innovation

The TSATS initiative reflects India’s commitment to strengthening national defence through homegrown innovation, a vision championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat campaign. It aligns with the Ministry of Defence's focus on:

  • Reducing dependency on imported defence technologies

  • Enhancing operational preparedness through tailor-made solutions

  • Building a long-term civil-military technological knowledge ecosystem

Senior military officials noted that many future battlefield technologies are likely to emerge from university research labs, and that structured, formal engagement like TSATS would act as a force multiplier for India's defence R&D.

A Vision Beyond 2025

The symposium is designed not as a one-off event but as part of a sustained engagement strategy to build enduring academic-defence partnerships. Institutions that show promise may be invited to participate in pilot projects, defence innovation hubs, or joint research fellowships in the future.

It also opens the door for student internships, military-academia exchange programs, and customized curriculum development, ensuring that future engineers and scientists are prepared to meet the strategic challenges of tomorrow.

A New Chapter in Defence-Academic Collaboration

The Curtain Raiser for TSATS 2025 not only signals the beginning of preparations for a landmark defence technology symposium but also embodies a larger national mission to empower innovation, tap grassroots talent, and align scientific research with military readiness.

With a carefully structured roadmap, cross-sectoral cooperation, and a shared commitment to technological excellence, India is well on its way to building a self-sustaining, resilient, and future-ready defence ecosystem.
