In a stark escalation of tensions, violent clashes erupted on Thursday between Thailand and Cambodia, particularly in contested border areas. At least one civilian has died in the skirmishes, and several others have sustained injuries, amid a backdrop of rapidly deteriorating diplomatic ties.
According to the Thai army, airstrikes targeted multiple locations within Cambodian territory. The Cambodian Defence Ministry claimed that these strikes involved fighter jets dropping bombs near the revered Preah Vihear temple, heightening regional concerns.
Surasant Kongsiri, spokesperson for the Thai Defence Ministry, reported ongoing clashes in at least six areas along the disputed frontier. Both nations have laid blame on the other for firing the first shots, as violence ensued near historical border landmarks.
